A Swimming Holiday

It is time once again to look forward to next year and plan what exciting holidays I could be taking, I saw this holiday on the Holiday program a few years ago and it has fascinated me ever since. The idea is to go somewhere where the water is quite warm and which has a lot of islands dotted around quite close to one another and spend the week swimming around from island to island. The superiority I felt whilst cycling around Scotland over foolish people in cars and walking around will be as nothing to the superiority you would feel on this holiday over foolish people catching ferries or just lazing on beaches, how insufficient and inadequate will they feel as you emerge from the waves !

I have found one operator which arranges this, they are called swimtrek and they run holidays in a number of locations including Greece, Croatia, Turkey and Scotland ( which they say is "suprisingly warm" ). A general day runs like this; you get up and have a little walk down to the beach or cove for the start point of the swim, then you're split up into small groups based on your swimming speed and ability, each group sets off with a support boat to hand out drinks and snacks ( and which you can sit on for as long as you like ) and swims between 3 - 5Km to the next island which should take 2-3 hours leaving you the rest of the afternoon to laze on the beach, frequent the bars or indulge in some more swimming or walking in especially scenic locations.

Some people may well question why you want to do this rather than simply getting the ferry between islands and spending all night punching the air in night clubs, anyone asking such a question will be unconvinced by any explanation however people who think swimming around in the sea is fun and like a little adventure would certainly enjoy it.

None of the swims are over 5KM so they suggest that anyone wanting to come along should be able to comfortably swim this distance, I can currently comfortably swim 3KM ( on a dead slow setting ) in around an hour so 5KM should not be that difficult for anyone to manage with a bit of practice. They have a 3 month training plan which you can follow to prepare yourself. Apparently swimming in the sea is a bit more tricky than swimming in a pool but it's also a lot more fun which is, apparently, a great motivator and enables people who have doubts about there ability to swim that far to do it easily, there is always the boat to sit on if you prefer.

All of the holidays cost £650 for the swimming guides, support boats, accommodation, food and moving your luggage between hotels. It is probably best to do this in the summer when the water is warm ! Croatia looks like a fun place to do this as do the Bavarian Lakes ( which have the bonus of being fresh water and short distances ), Scotland does not look that enticing despite their protestations about the warming gulf stream !

Don't think so.

I know for a fact that I couldn't swim 5km let alone 5km every day for a week. And neither would I want to, so I think I'll give this one a miss. £650?? Bit expensive considering you have to swim everywhere.

Small Easy Stages

On a lot of the holidays you don't actually swim the entire distance in one go ( and very few of the days total 5KM, usually 3KM or 4KM at the most ) but have a bit of a swim then a little hike and something to eat before getting back in the water for another little swim etc etc. The holiday in the Bavarian lakes seems to include a day of swimming down a river which isn't exactly challenging 'cos you're being carried down stream anyway. You can also use fins if you like which make the whole thing about 20 times easier.

£650 includes all your food and accommodation so it's not a bad price. Anyone can learn to swim 5KM, have a go - it will do you good !

The man who runs these holidays says that they are not endurance competitions but holidays and they should be enjoyable. He also says "Ferries are for wimps".

I Like...

When I'm on holiday I like lazing around on the beach, lazing around in beach bars, lazing around in cafes. I like being able to go out at midnight and being one of the first people to arrive and go home at six and be one of the first to leave, I like staying up late enough to seeing the sunrise. I like having no plans.

The thought of spending a week on a guided tour with a fixed itinery and supposed 'like-minded' individuals be it on a walking, sailing, swimming, cycling or whatever to me sounds as much fun as a funeral.

And £650? Ninety quid a day based on two sharing without flights in one of the cheapest countries in the Mediterranean, yeah bargain.

Right I'm off to book a axe thowing and beer drinking holiday around viking country. :-)

Suck It And See

Going on holiday with groups of people you don't know to start with can go either way, sometimes you end up with nice people who you get on with and have a great time and sometimes you end up with a bunch of german, danish and israeli people who are unutterably and endlessly dull whom you grow to hate. Even in those circumstances there are usually at least 2 or 3 other people to share your hatred and get drunk with.

German, Israeli and Danish People?

What's wrong with German, Israeli and Danish people? I've never met a German that I didn't like, I shared a house with two and a Danish lad who was a cool bloke. And you love Steffi, ha ha. I've never met any Israelies but I'm sure they are cool too.

Never judge a book by it's cover

I'm sure most Germans are great people, Dutch too and although I have yet to meet any Israelis who I have got along with I'm sure it would be the same with them. However when you gather the most obnoxious representatives of each nationality on board a small 30 foot boat and are stuck with them for 3 days then you may begin to realise what it means to hate.

Most normal people do not go to bed at 9PM ( en masse ) when the captain of the boat has laid on tons of beer and planned to spend the evening having a good drink. Most normal people, having gone to bed en-masse at 9PM do not then moan about the noise created by the 1 remaining passenger, the captain and the 2 crew members who cannot see any sense in going to bed at 9PM when there is still a ship load of booze to be drunk. Most normal people do not, when taken by the captain to a lovely bar on a nice little island for a introuductory first night drink, have a look at all the chairs and tables the captain and his willing ( English ) assistants have collected from around the bar for their sitting pleasure, turn their noses up and scatter to remote corners of the bar in their ethnic groups and pester the captain to take them back to the boat at 9PM for their sleep. I'm sure the captain and his crew have met a great many nationalities but I bet he doesn't say of most his passengers "How the hell have such a miserable bunch of wankers all managed to book themselves onto my boat ?".

Hee Hee

I think you have illustrated perfectly why I don't want to go on any of those silly holidays.
