This one is crazy ... Squares A and B are the EXACT same shade... open it up in MSPaint, cut out a piece of B and drag it over to A and see for your self.
I did it. It is true. My puny brain is confused. Damn my puny brain!

Yep. there is a "shadow" falling from the cylinder. The fact remains though - squares A and B are the same shade of grey!!!

The squares might be the same shade but the letters A and B are different colours, I think you differentiate shades by using the contrast between an object and those surrounding it so there is no direct way of comparing those two squares because the letters are different colours and the shadow means the surrounding squares are different colours too.
