Amy winehouse

Ah. That "troubled" singer woman. I watched some of her Glastonbury set last night and was surprised at how poor it was. She was mumbling, tripping over herself and obviously had no respect for her material. Then I read this on the BBC website today:

"The Grammy-winning singer was on fine form and in good voice for most of the set, going some way to dispelling fears about her health."

hmmm... Were we watching the same thing?

Hah ha

I've just watched some of it on catch up TV, it's hilarious. I like the bits where she gets bored and puts on the stupid voices and makes her voice sound like a breaking record player. Also substituting pointless wails and moaning for the words at random is funny. Also she must have taken at least 20mins just introducing the band which was pointless because you could hardly make out any of the names she was saying anyway.

In defence of Winehouse

What you need to remember is that Winehouse has always been shit, she's shit now and she will be shit at any given point in the future. If you are watching one of her gigs there is never any question "Maybe this will be alright tonight, maybe she wont be shit" because she will always be shit. At any concert, festival, initimate gig at any time in either the past of the future and in any location Amy Winehouse will always be shit, there is never any other outcome.

Were We Watching the Same Thing

Well no that's the problem isn't it you were watching a recording of the live show and not the show itself or at least that's what Phil said about Paul McCartney when he appeared to be absolutely dreadful a couple of years ago.

The best review of Ms Winehouse I've seen is on the Guardian music blog:

"Rubbish
Drunken rambling old slapper.
More fool the idiots watching"

I've never been a fan of live hip-hop but reckon that Jay-Z seemed alright, his version of Wonderwall was no worse than Oasis's a couple of years back. He had good lights any way. ;)

I disagree

I don't think you can compare her performance to Paul Macartneys. Paul Macartney put on a really good show even though his voice was a bit rough. He created a good atmosphere with the crowd, not like that jibbering wreck on the telly last night.

On the TV

He definitely looked and sounded really shit so if he was actually really good at the site I guess there could be a possibility that Winehouse went down well with the crowd as well. If it wasn't for the fact that she is Amy Winehouse and will always be really shit live anyway.

orrible....

You wanna watch what your sayin' - she'll get her husband to come and duff you up. We watched it last night too, and Cat reckons she was even worse than that when she saw her earlier this year.
Jay - Z was a fucking joke too. What a big pile of shite.

Awful.

Me and Jeanine were playing a game where you have to see if you can work out what she was actually singing. It went something like this - "mmnnaaa mmmnnneee oooo aaaa eeee mnamnamna oooooaaaaaaeeeeee owwwwwwwwwwww".

Then she would "talk" inbetween "songs", she sounded like the drunk bloke in The Fast Show. "mmmmnn mmnnnnn TIGER mmnnnn mnnnnnn I'm afraid I was very very drunk".

I think Amy Winehouse is a fucking mess and if I had paid money to watch that shambling wreck I would want a refund. The crowd did not look to impressed, at one point I think she said "This isn't a quiet competition" or something like that. Even her backing singers kept giving her funny looks.

Crazy rock and roll types

I remember reading somewhere a defence of the Winehouse - saying that drugs and atti-tood is essential to great music/art. I think it sort of misses the point. Billie Holiday, for example, was a heavy drug user, was jailed and married a mobster; however her recordings and performances always retained a respect for the music and the audience. I understand that The Winehouse is a little bit post-modern (her songs aren't emotional, are a little detached and she even says "fuck" on a jazz ballad - oooh!!) and that it isn't cool to display too much musical talent nowadays but her contempt for her own material, the band supporting her and her audience means she is now a "celeb" and not a "musician". A shame, because there is something there...Somewhere.

Billie Holiday

I don't know enough about Billie Holiday to comment about her but I do know of other artists that had messed up personal lives and were heavily into drugs and had just as many shambolic performances but on their day were capable of amazing things. Kurt Cobain anyone.

Wouldn't it be nice

I think Rehab has a chance of becoming a "modern soul" classic along with that hit by the Duffy woman... both songs have a timeless quality about them. It just seems that Amy Winehouse is becoming less interested in the music, man than in just being AMY WINEHOUSE THE CELEBRITY. Which, of course, is her choice. I mean, we don't live in a dictatorship do we? DO WE???

(We might - perhaps that lunatic I harassed at that Peace festival some time ago was right... we are governed by Nazis, man - NAZIS!!!)

Duffy

Is fucking awful.

The dark side

Such rage, young Skywalker.

Lulu

I can't stand Lulu so why would I want to endure the Karaoke version.
