Personally

I don't care what we do.

Phil is wrong the Hare and Hounds is not depressing and the food from the restaurant's across the road is very tasty and is a much bigger selection. Also I'm pretty sure if you said there are twelve people turning up to drink in your pub and have food (which you will take a cut from) they'd be more than happy to reserve a table for us. And Colin won't sulk.

On the other hand, I can walk to the Watan, we bring our own beers and then go for an after beer in the Selly Park Tavern. And Phil won't get depressed.

That's all I have to say. Somebody let me know. I had a moment of weakness I shall not return to this site until the Secret Santa goes live.

I will be free on the 20th.

Back to the food

I really enjoy going out for the Christmas meal, I think it makes it all that bit more special. So I have just found this, hoping they have a english menu for those who are not the biggest indian cuisine fans but seems it might suit most. BYO, which also sounds good, and it's a local one.

For nearly a quarter-century Royal Watan has been a fixture of Birmigham’s Indian dining scene. The Selly Park restaurant specializes in traditional balti dishes from the heart of Kashmir with an extensive choice on offer. Spices are freshly ground and dishes made fresh to order with most of the balti dishes priced around the £6 mark. The Royal Watan is BYO which means you can bring your own alcohol or stick with their in-house range of soft drinks. There is an also an outside catering service and facilities for hosting special functions and events. It’s open seven days a week from 5pm til late and has a free home delivery service within a three-mile radius. Teachers, nurses, police, firemen and BBC staff all get a 10% discount. For more information, visit the Royal Watan website.

Okey Cokey

I think everyone here seems to like this idea so I guess that just leaves Chris & Shells and Paul & Kerri to check it out and agree. Assuming they'd be happy here too we need to sort out a date. I think Christmas is on Thursday and the closer to then we can have it the better. I'm free any evening before that, maybe a weekend would be better to allow greater drunkeness unless everyone will be on holiday for the Mon & Tues before the big day...

christmas do

hi. paul and i will do what everyone else wants to as we're not fussed if we eat or not as long as there is plenty of drinking involved!!! so just let us know where and when and we shall be there.

paul says.......

what about hare and hounds? they have a variety of takeaway menus you can order and eat in the pub. quite cheap too

busy

There is a decent choice of different foods but there's only really 2 or 3 suitably sized tables for all of us in the pub & unless we get there pretty early it can also get quite busy, on the weekends anyway. My preference is for the place by the Selly Park Tavern, I think bringing your own booze will make it much cheaper here than drinking at the Hounds all night, but what do y'all think ?

Anyone got any dates they can't make ?

christmas - hare and hounds

paul was thinking they may let us have the back room for a couple of hours if we ask them now, plus people can choose what they want from a variety of menus and not have to have english food in an indian!

anyway i'm not fussed cos i love indian food! i think we are free anytime pretty much at the moment but need to know dates soon as we have lots of people to fit in and see!

Personally....

I prefer the idea of going to the place on the pershore road. Am I the only one who finds the Hare and Hounds very Dark, dingy and depressing?

Yes

I think you probably are too, I think it's a great place to go for a drink just not the best place to have a christmas meal.

I don't think there's any way on earth they're going to let us have any of their rooms to ourselves unless we paid them lots of money for it and even if we did there won't be enough of us to fill it up. Also it's not really like pub snacks, all the food comes from the indian and malaysian restaurants off Kings Heath high street so the foods going to be just as expensive as it at the restaurant in the first place. When I have the chance I'll look for the places they use so you can look at the food & prices.

Any way we need to find somewhere ASAP, either the place next to the Selly Park tavern or here it doesn't matter we need to sort out the dates everyones free first. Can everyone make it on Sat 20th December ?

Yes.

You are.

christmas

hare and hounds- dark and depressing....not sure why you would think that but i think it's a great place. i love these type of places such as coach and horses too etc etc

anyway...yup we are free sat 20th!

freedom

Not sure when we'll be free to be honest... I think Rachael's parents are coming down that weekend. Maybe best if everyone else sorts themselves out and if we happen to fit in then great.

Pub.

I quite like the idea of just going to a pub and getting pub snacks but I have a feeling I am in the minority so whatever everyone else wants to do is fine by me.

I'll probably go home early anyway as I am starting to go off you all.

Fair enough

You need the beauty sleep !

Yep.

This sounds good to me, with the credit crunch and all, cheap is good!

Ticks Boxes

It looks quite nice from the outside when I've been past and being close to the Selly Park tavern is handy for meeting up or post meal drinks and it looks reasonably priced so I'd be up for going here.

Nice naan

I bought a naan once from there... it was nice.

Great.

This sounds like a great idea. Jeanine hates indian food but as long as they do english food she should be fine.

Book it!

Wickit

Their very musical website says they do English, there is a whole section but it mainly revolves around things with chips or omlette.

Hate indian?

No help.

That is not going to help to convince her.

Looks like a pile of shit next to a pile of sick!

Reviews...

Two Nights Shocker

Mr Rollins suggested that we had two nights out - firstly a meal with our wives and secondly a pub night with our girlfriends. Ha ha. :)

Well he didn't really but he did suggest that we had a lads night in the pub and another with WAGS at McDonalds.

christmas do

I wondered if anybody fancied going to Teppanyaki. its in the mail box. They cook in front of you and there is an opportunity to cook as well. Ends up a bit messy. Normally around £30 for 3-4 courses. Cat xxx

fishy

I've never tried Japanese food but I guess it could, possibly, be nice, is it one of those places where the food moves past on little conveyor belts and you have to grab it quick.

Teppanyakki

Teppanyaki is nice. No its not on conveyor belt it's where you sit around a hot plate and the chef prepares your food in front of you in an amusing manner its lots of bang bang bang and flinging stuff around. Its basically meat and rice though. Its more of a performance than a meal I suppose and there'd be even less talking because we'd alll be watching the chef and the place I went to had no vegetarian option at all (and the beer was expensive!).

Too much.

I would have to say no if we went there. £60 for me and Jeanine before we have even had a drink would be too expensive. Think of the credit crunch.

Anyone for Country Girl and then chips from the chippy outside? We could all share a big bag and sneak in our own cans.

Very Cheap.

ooooohhhhh yeah!!

just like the good old days. yes i agree £30 a head is a bit steep. We need to go some with a nice big ROUND table which is reasonably priced, £20 max?

Karaoke

I think we should go here for our christmas meal.

http://www.padthai.co.uk/index.html

Thai

I like Thai food and someone I overheard on the bus was saying this place was quite nice. There's also supposed to be an excellent, dirt cheap, thai place in Moseley by the Patrick Kavanagh

Yeah

But I bet that Moseley one:

a) doesn't have Karaoke after the meal.
b) is dangerous.
c) is full of Tabitha and Tarquins slumming it in the bo ho area.

Thaid up

I've eaten there - it was nice... quite small and not really "dirt cheap" but then not too expensive either.

Or.

The Country Girl.

Pub?

Why don't we just go straight to a pub and forgo all the meal crap. It always just gets in the way of drinking and you end up only speaking to the two nearest people to you. Not very sociable really no matter where you go.

Tapas

Agreed about the only talking to the people next to you thing but I do like a good feed as well. Maybe if there was any tapas places we could eat, stand up and wander around and drink at the same time.

Tapas

The only good tapas places I know where you can stand up and wander around are in Spain. And the idea of tapas is that you bar hop rather than eat in the same place anyhow.

Col you can always get up and change seats. But I do know what you are saying about not talking to everyone.

Or.....

you could have your tea before you come out.

Meal

I do think the idea of a meal is nice - and it makes it more of an occasion. However, with the onset of a baby I'm not sure what I'll be doing around xmas time so I'm willing to go with whatever.

?

I just don't know where the xmas meal came from? We used to always just go to the pub but then suddenly we have to go for a meal. I just feel it is more trouble than it is worth (to arrange), you will never please everyone and it makes it more expensive.

History

In the beginning we all went to the pub on Christmas Eve and this was good.

Time passed and no longer was everyone allowed out of the house on Christmas Eve and this was not good and so it was decided to meet up for Christmas on a different night.

And lo, this raised a problem since going to the pub on a random day in December did not feel christmassy and this was not good

And lo, it was decided having a meal made for a special occasion around Christmas and did replace successfully the Christmas Eve piss up.

I still like the idea of going out for a meal I think it is fun and nowhere near as hard to organise as the Secret Santa. We really can just go to the pub at any time and that, for me, just aint Christmas.

In The Beginning Part 2

You forget that before going for a meal, we'd started meeting up on the 22nd or 23rd rather than Chrismas Eve. I quite enjoy going for a meal because it aint something I do that often but would be quite happy to have a "fallow" year and just meet up for a pint if the Club so wished

Do we get to start swearing yet?

Special Occasion....

A meal does seem to make it a special occasion. I can see your point about being restricted to just talking to the people next to you though. If we do go for a meal, we should book some where with a nice big round table so you can talk to everyone

Meal?

I suggest another meal with drinks afterwards. Not sure where though. That pizza place in harborne is quite nice

Pizza Express ?

Yeah thats quite nice but like the place last year I don't think it's all that conducive to sitting around after the meal and getting drunk. I reckon somewhere smaller and less of a global megacorp might be nicer this year.

Anyway why are we discussing this now, it's ages away yet and once they turn on their mega hadron collider we will all most likely be dead anyway.

Big Particle Smasher Thing

Apparently (according to the CERN website) they turned it on a couple of weeks ago for initial testing.

We're discussing it now because it takes ages to decide anything with you lot. ;)

Pizza Express is just like going to Pizza Hut.

I reckon Joe should cook us all food in his bachelor pad or we could go to the Thai place near the Bier Kellar where you get your own private room for Karaoke after the meal or we could go to the Bier Kellar and dance on tables to Oompah Music.

Black Hole Earth

Yes they're testing it but I think their tests so far have just been whizzing particles around rather than the smashing them into each other part which will kill us. The last I heard a week or so ago was they had to bring the last cooling unit on line before they could begin the smashing properly.

10 September

Apparently the first collision will be on the 10 September, I'll have a lie in that day, no point rushing to work only to find that you get swallowed up by a black hole just after the sandwich trolley has arrived.

I Bet...

I bet you they have just for a laugh without even turning on the cooling device.

CERN

I like the fact that on the CERN website it pretty much says we dont believe that we'll create black holes, vacuum bubles or stranglets or any other nasty side effect because cosmic rays already bash into each other and do do it an even if we did the fact that it hasn't caused us any problems thus far....

Nicer...

Pizza express is alot nice I think than pizza hut. Also, it wouldn't be any problem going to a pub afterwards.
