Museum Of Bad Art

Whilst I was in Madrid I visited many art galleries, in some of them I saw some good paintings but in most of them there was a lot of highly questionable rubbish.

In one room there was a movie showing some photographers photos of a factory with a voiceover of the photographer himself being interviewed. When I entered the room the photo being shown was of a concrete step. It looked like a concrete step. The voice-over for this piece lasted for 5 long boring minutes but still the photo just looked like a concrete step. Next there was a photo of a door, a green door but the voice over was a bit lost for words

"And this next piece, what is the significance of this ?"
"Ah, this one. Well this is . . . ah well it's actually a door"

"A door, yes it is a door. it would appear to be green in colour, can you talk us through it ?"
"Yes well, it is a door, a green door. It's a swing door I think, it did open both ways and yes ... a door. Door"
"Fascinating, this door is shown within a door frame and a section of wall, is this significant ?"
"The frame isn't the same colour as the door but really the door is the subject here"
"Ahh, the door. Yes"
"Indeed, a green door"

I had to leave then and found myself in a room filled with ... works ... where the 'artist' had painted the canvas black, ripped it up with a stanley knife, scrunched it into a ball and varnished it. The sign said these were very important ... works ... indeed.

Later on in the hostel I met a man who claimed to have seen "The Guernica" picture and been so overcome with emotion he actually burst into tears right there in the gallery. It didn't have this effect on me which is why I'm glad to have discovered there is a museum of bad art especially made for people just like me. You can see a lot of their works on-line here: http://www.museumofbadart.org/collection/unseen-12.html The one linked to is particualry bad and the "Peter The Cat" one is worth a look too.

The most interesting thing I saw in these galleries wasn't a painting at all but a big room with a huge rack of small scrolling LCD devices showing lines of text. The text is screen scraped from random chat rooms around the world in real time so the rack shows lots of partial conversations or contextless questions and answers. The text scrolls all across the racks and there is a sort of musical background which speeds up as the scrolling gets more and more frantic and the rack zeroes in on a particular conversation and it starts to take over all the other screens. The funny thing is there obviously no censorship at all so whilst some of the text is pretty mundane a lot if it is just bizzare like "hey, when are you coming over so I can feel your new titties ?".
