The government might introduce harsher penalties for speeding motorists by disqualifiying anyone caught driving over the speed limit at an excessively dangerous level more than once.
Apparently the dangerously excessive level they have in mind is over 90mph on the motorway. I am, admittedly, not an expert on motorway driving but even in my limited experience it seems to me that 90mph is more like the average speed everyone drives on the motorway rather an excessively dangerous aberration. The most my Nissan Micra could normally manage was 85 on most motorways which more often than not meant dodging the lorries in the slow lane ( sorry, inside lane ) and 95 at a push down hills with a big run up but I'm quite sure even at these speeds there were way more people overtaking me than I overtook lorries. Maybe it's just me who's out of touch with reality here.
I, obviously, think it's a ridiculous idea. I don't think it's necessarily driving fast on a motorway which causes accidents, I think it's dodging in an out of traffic, tailgating people, people on phones not concentrating on what they're doing that causes accidents. I do think speed limits have their place, people drive far too fast down a lot of residential streets so I don't mind 20mph speed limits where they appear.
Motorways though are different, they shouldn't have pedestrians on them hiding behind parked cars waiting to leap out in front of you, they don't have schools opening out onto them, they're not used as childrens playgrounds, they don't habitually have pot holes and debris scattered across them and there aren't that many sharp corners, hump back bridges, blind bends or hidden mini roundabouts.

Speedy people
The people who are driving at 90+ miles an hour tned to be the tossers who are lane-changing and weaving anyhow. String em up!
?
Joe I don't really think you are in any position to be make any judgements on driving when you thought it was ok to drive without an MOT.
There was also quite a serious crash on a motorway recently that got quite a bit of press. The problem with crashing on a motorway going at over 90 miles an hour is that if you do crash then you are not likely to walk away. I have seen a lot more near misses on the motorway than on normal roads.
Radio 2 Learning Experience
The travel totty on Radio 2 this morning was talking about near misses when Boggy Marsh jumped in and said that "near misses" was a misnomer. The travel totty disagreed and even I thought boggy had been hitting the rum a bit too much of late until he pointed out the correct term would be "near hit" which is absolutely right but not something I'd realised before.
There'd be much less accidents on the motorway if all the slowcoaches stayed in the slow lane and left the other lanes for important business men in a hurry and footballers hurrying to get home after a late party.
Near miss
I think "near miss" is fine... it's like a narrow miss or a close miss. you missed but only just... A near hit would actually be a hit... or a nearly hit?? I am confusing myself now.
A Near Miss
I think that's what Joe needs..he he...I suppose a near Mrs would suffice.
Or like someone but I can't remember who it was said at the weekend "gay sex is still sex" so may a near Mr would do.
Could be
Could be you have a point. I shall write to Mr Wogan and instruct him to keep his minions in line when I am half asleep and susceptible to their inanity.
Have you heard Terry Wogans christmas single ? He is playing the part of Bing Crosby.
I
think I agree with you Joe on your latest rant! Whenever I have driven at 70 on an Mway I seem to be one of the slowest cars on it. Motorway driving should be about consistent speed and lanes. Accidents are often caused by lack of concentration or distraction.
-MOTs are funny things. My Panda passed with a starter motor that did not work. Apparantly starter motors were not included on the test.
nEra hit, near niss. Makes sense as I guess a near miss would be a hit. So a near hit would just miss.
Sold your garden ornament yet?
on the autobahn I can drive as fast as I like
We can learn a lot from German efficiency I think.
No I still have the garden ornament but I've just had a great idea. I would love to present it as a gift to the Icelandic people, if you can contact the head bjork or whatever whilst you're there and arrange things that would be great. All they need to do is arrange for transportation from my house and let me know when they arrange the grand emplacement ceremony so I can be there in time for the free drinks and nibbles and stuff.
MOT
MOTs are only supposed to test for road safety and worthiness... if it doesn't start then it's very safe indeed!
