Visions

I've got visions of Joe regaling us with tales of Withnail and I style horror.

Survived !

Well, funny you should say that. When we arrived it seemed like the entire village was in the pub, all 6 of them turned to look as we entered. One even fell off his stool.

"City folk !"

The barman asked if we were the lot staying up at "The Old Mill". Silas had been trying to get some tennants for many a year now and had been all week making his preparations. Silas arrived in his tractor.

"Aaarrr" he said
"I've been a fetteling with water pump since the dawn these many hours ago and she still won't go, naaaar. Old Feckless the Cow is powerful thirsty so she be a staying in yon outhouse whilst you be here. Come bye I'll show you up"

Having driven over many fields in the wake of Silas tractor, the rain lashing against the windscreen blown in the teeth of a perpetual howling gale we made land fall.

"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar, I builded it myself" said Old Silas
"Me and Feckless will be retiring here many a year for now but whilst we waits we is happy to let other folks come by"

He insisted we transact the deal in the cash in the light of his tractors headlights out in the rain and refused to give us the key until we had paid up. Needless to say we weren't best pleased by that but since it had taken us 10 hours to drive from Dublin and it was now 1AM in the morning after our hours drive over the fields we didn't have much choice.

"Aaaaaaaaaaar, watch him, he be the silage pit" indicated Silas pointing to a huge stinking tank outside the front door.

The door creaked open and Silas lit the candles inside.

"Electricity be orrrf again, mayhap it will be on again awhiles"

A dank kitchen opened off the hallway, the sink filled with rancid food and unwashed dishes....

. . . fill in for yourself . . .

We spent the entire time huddled in the cold dankness of the one inhabitable room, arguing constantly and unable to go out at all into the rain choked gale which raged permanently above the cloying mud of the surrounding fields. Several people couldn't take it any longer and ran out, screaming into the night. We never saw them again.
