I just had to click through ten pages of shit just to get to the option to turn off automatic subscription renewal on xbox live. I reckon I've must have wasted over forty quid this year.

thing is.....
I'd be really paranoid about buying a second hand xbox - not knowing if or when it will get the red ring. I don't understand how people are getting their xbox back after being repaired and 6 months later the same thing happens - surely microsoft would have sussed out whats causing the problem by now. I think the whole thing is a scam to scare people away from chipping their xbox and preventing piracy.

I didn't think you could do it manually. I had to cancel mine by phoning up. Their very crafty the way they get money from people. I was tempted to get rid of my xbox after the way they messed me around.
And then...
It put me through about five pages of adverts to get rid of it.
PS3
I am cancelling mine when it runs out. Don't see why I should pay for it when it is FREE on my PS3.
Hope I can cancel it though. I have heard before that it is mission impossible.

No.
Simple answer is no. I read a really good article on which was better and basically it said that you can't actually tell the difference unless you hook them up to all sorts of gizmos.
The only thing it did say was that apparently the xbox has been pushed about as far as it can go now but the ps3 can go further.
But I have also heard that developers currently mainly make games for the xbox then port them across.
I think you will always get people thinking that one is better than the other but I have played the same games on both and you can't tell the difference.
Oh also the ps3 has a faster loading time but it is only seconds faster so I can't really see as it matters.
Oh and the other thing I have noticed is how quiet the ps3 is comparred to the xbox.
Oh and blueray is good.

Yeah, I've been watching a lot of blueray things lately and I think it is pretty good - although I probably wouldn't actually buy bluray films until they drop the price a bit.
Xboxy stuff
The xbox is bloody loud. We use it to watch films on - and it works great - but the fan noise is quite distracting if you focus in on it!
I think developers had problems with the PS3 at first - the coding was apparently a pig - but now it's not so much of a problem. The machine is definitely more powerful but I think one of the things that will really allow it to push forward is the extra capacity for storage and more complex games on blu ray.
At the moment, however, there aren't many console specific exclusive games to force you to buy one or the other. Although I would say that Mass Effect 2 on the xbox is sensational; and I've heard great things about Uncharted on the PS3...

Yeah, I like the download films stuff on the x-box but I hardly ever actually use it simply because I cannot stand trying to watch anything with, what sounds like, a jet engine going off over the top. That and the fact there is also a very limited choice, which hardly ever changes, and the "feature" that if you start to watch something one day - get distracted and do something else and then come back to it a few days later the bloody thing is now locked out and you can't watch it. Actually I don't like it at all, it's shit !

Films are annoying to watch on the xbox for when you get a quiet bit in the film all you can hear is the vrooooooooommmm of the xbox. Watch the bit on Saving Private Ryan when he loses his hearing on the beach and you'll know what I mean!

I bought one of those cooling fans when I first got my xbox, and that was even noisier. It sounded like there was a harrier taking off in my living room.

Ah ha ! That makes sense of a lot of things to me now, I did wonder what the North & South bridges were doing inside computers.
Armed with this new information I have now placed my X-Box in a bath of cool water to simulate a river, this should make the trolls feel more at home.

You can change your settings on the Inteweb to not renew automatically. BUT I did this and it stopped now three months later they are charging again, but my account is still saying its a silver account (ie free)
