Geocaching

Here is a good club activity - Geocaching. The idea is very simple, basically people take a box, put some random stuff in it and go and bury it somewhere.

Other people ( geocache hunters ) then use the web site to find Geocaches near where they are, or where they are going and go and find the cache. Some caches may contain special instructions but most allow you to take a few things from the cache and require you to add some of your own stuff.

( I came across this activity in the course of a /. discussion on mysterious inscribed slabs which are appearing across the world. By across the world it becomes evident they mean across America ! )

All you need to join in is a GPS device ( which I have access to ) and a look at the website to see which caches you want to track down.

This is not a high adrenalin activity but on a nice day with nothing better to do it sounds like a good way to use up some of that precious time.

I am already constructing my cache, if anyone knows where I can get 1/4 pound of TNT I'd be greatful - I think the hair trigger is working OK now.

Sounds fun

The TNT idea sounds very good! Can that be mass-produced?

I believe it can, there are a

I believe it can, there are a curios mix of Arabic gentlemen and Texans who are usually more than willing to provide you with the raw materials. You can find them in most seedy boozers south of the river and at todays prices it's possible to buy enough TNT to fill around half a dozen boxes for the price of a good night out.

Geocaching - hide it, don't bury it

Just a friendly note to let people know that caches shouldn't be buried. This could cause environmental degradation if people start digging holes trying to try to uncover a cache. Caches should be well concealed - under a log, in the hollow of a tree, covered in twigs, bark, rocks, etc. The game/sport is a lot of fun especially when it takes you to new places and vistas you would never have seen if it wasn't for geocaching.

You're kidding about the TNT, right? :}
