I am supposed to be doing my expedition write up. Instead i am day dreaming about my holiday!
This is a pic of me ice climbing on a glacier at Cayambe Volcano
As hinted inmy last letter my voyage around India has finished. A voyage of
truly mamoth proportions has left me breathless and a bit knackered! My
final few days were spent in Calcutta and at one of the Gangas many mouths.
My little pilgramage with the water from Gaumukh is complete. The spot where
the Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal is called Gangasgar. An Island in the
Ganges delta. The Island itself is very peaceful compared with Calcutta but
unfortunately the spot where the Ganga meets the sea is not too remarkable.
Gaumukh is stunning. Gangsagar is dirty and covered in pylons. Hundereds of
Hello!
When I last wrote i was in Delhi on my way to Agra. Delhi is a city that I
found to be very pleasant and not as crazy as I had imagined or been told by
other backpackers. I enjoyed its western treats (ice coffee, mmm!) and the
history surrounding what is an ancient city.
What I can say about Agra will be difficult as words are empty compared with
the beauty of the Taj Mahal. Like Delhi I had been warned that Agra itself
is a nightmare full of touts, rip off merchants and con artists. The reality
that Zoe and I found was very different. As we had heard all of these bad
Hello. When I last wrote I was in Rishikesh, about to head north along the
Ganga valley to the source of this holiest of rivers, at Gaumekh. From
Rishikesh this is only a distance of 264kms, doesnt sound like much. But it
can take a good 3 days. When we left I did not realise how difficult this
trip would be. Or how beautiful.
The first 100kms to the town of Utarkashi was fairly uneventful, if slow.
Busses in this area seem to average about 15kmh with all the stops that they
make. Very frustrating. Utarkashi is a nice little town. And the last town
of any size along the valley. After here its was just villages and lone
After Pushkar we travelled to Jodhpur - the Blue City. It is known as the
blue city as many of its buildings are painted blue as a deterrant to
mosquitos and to keep cool. The most striking feature of Jodhpur is the
Meherangarh Fort. A massive 15th century fort built over a 125m high hill
right in the middle of the city. The fort dominates all views within the
city and has some magnificent views from on top. The Maharaja of Jodhpur
still runs the fort as a museum to the history of his family and life in the
fort as well as life in Jodhpur through the ages.
It was in the fort that Zoe and I made 2 new friends in Hemant and Pintu.
Well folks, hear I am. In India. At the start of anoher litle trip around
this globe of ours. All my hard work in the warehouse packing Barbie Dolls
(there is a Barbie doll where she has one black baby and one white baby,
also a 4 foot 10 inch barbie doll called My Size Barbie. Kylie Minogue is 4
foot 10 inch) has paid off. I am now free again and plan to let you all know
about my adventures. Who would have guessed that hard work pays dividends!
My trip starts with a stop in Bahrain. The airport was covered in xmas decs.
Interesting. I always thought the birth of Christ was significant to
